Growing up in rural Sligo, surrounded by fields, sheep and… not a huge amount else – from an early age I learned that life really is what you make it! I’ve never been one into sports, or until recently any type of fitness!! During school, when the others were off playing football or rugby, I was usually found in the tuck shop – or down drooling over the latest gadgets down town.
Fast forward to 2011 when I appeared on a TV show called The Biggest Loser UK – a reality weight loss show where I came runner up. Indeed, a show that I used to watch myself religiously for many years. In short, the show aims to push contestants to their limits to break physical & mental barriers to achieve success that seemed like a distant dream! The show aired on ITV1 and TV3, along with a few syndications globally – and it was around this time that my entire mindset changed.
You see, until then I just accepted things as they were. I accepted I was meant to be overweight, I accepted that I was almost a victim and poor me having to live an unhealthy life with all the negativity that goes with it. During the show however, I had the opportunity to do, see and feel just how utterly amazing life can be when you push the boundaries, #stretchyourself, and don’t give up on yourself – EVER!. I was extremely fortunate to have an amazing support network around me – and today, it's this support I try to provide others through the various social media platforms I use. One of the main beliefs I have is that your weight, your body shape or size does not in any way determine who you are as a person, or what you can achieve in life.
If you have a passion and ambition to #MakeLifeRicher– there is always a way to make it happen. Half the battle is believing in yourself, the other half is to Never Give Up.
To look at me, I look FAR from your typical Personal Trainer – no abs, gains, no constant talk about macros and shakes – however, in 2011 I pushed myself to get my qualification as a Personal Trainer. In the years after it I went on to do 1-2-1 personal training, group exercise classes, numerous media pieces on TV, Radio and Print. I continue to keep my education up to date, having gotten my TRX, Boxercise, Kickboxing and ViPR qualifications and am currently studying my Precision Nutrition Certification. All these may sound great on paper – but the truth is - they are pretty useless if you don’t have the mindset to maximise your potential. Yes, I have bad days, week, months – but the one thing I know through those periods – is that absolutely anything is possible. I achieved things I never thought I would before, so I know I can definitely do it again no matter what the challenge is I’m faced with.
