LIMERICK - 10/02/19

Things Made from Limerick

We are only days away from opening our third permanent pop-up in Limerick City’s Crescent Shopping Centre!! To celebrate we’re naming all the famous things we know are from Limerick! Here are things (read: people) who all rep Treaty County and holy what a line-up. Enjoy.

Michael D. Higgins

Yes, we know, Master Higgins spent a lot of time growing up in Co. Clare and most would say he’s a Galway man but did you know that he was actually born in Limerick?! Learn a new thing every day! Higgins is Ireland’s 9th President and assumed office in 2011. More new things: he speaks Spanish as well as Irish, is a published poet and is a regular at the Galway races each summer!

Greg O’Shea

Limerick’s favourite son (and a bit of a fan of G+C if we do say so..), we could basically write absolutely nothing about Greg here and you’d all still know all there is to know. Here’s the key stuff: he’s a pro rugby player, he seems super sound, he likes our gear, we believe he’s single, and yes, we do really hope he comes and sees us in Limerick.

The Shannonsiders

August 19th, 2018 marks a special day in Limerick’s calendar with it being the day the Senior Men’s Hurling Team secured the All-Ireland title win for the city. This is the  EIGHTH time this side has won the championship and they were welcomed home by more than 80,000 fans after what was a completely epic season and insanely well-deserved win. Gwan the lads.

Sinéad Flanagan

27-year-old Mungret native, Adare resident and all-round legend, Sinead is Limerick’s Rose and now officially the reigning Rose of Tralee after (literally) taking the crown earlier this year. She’s a trained physiotherapist, studied medicine at UCC and basically we can see exactly why she took top spot in what was the 60th anniversary of the competition.

Frank McCourt

Famed Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt was born in New York to a Limerick woman (yes, Angela). McCourt moved with his family back to the Treaty County during the Great Depression where he stayed until age 19, before moving back to the US. Every week though, he would send $10 of his $26 a week paycheck back to his ma in Limerick!

The Cranberries

They may have been formed way back in ‘89 but if you’ve never listened to The Cranberries then you’ve never really lived. Absolute legends of the alt-rock-grunge scene of the 90s, the band called it quits in 2019 after lead singer Dolores O’Riordan tragically passed away. Forever in our hearts and our tape decks/CD Players 💔

Marian Keyes

Another of our born-in-Limerick-but-raised-somewhere-else folks, author Marian Keyes spent her childhood in Monkstown but there’s Treaty County running through her veins nonetheless. Keyes has 13 novels, a law degree, and two Irish Book Awards under her belt and we have a Pink Fleck waiting for her.

Paul O’Connell

Paul Jeremiah O’Connell: rugby legend, BBC Sport pundit,autobiography-writer, loving husband, father of three and star sign Libra, in case you were wondering. Upon retirement, Paul was the third most-capped player in Irish rugby history. Paul, have you checked out our 40 Shades of Green Collection yet?

Bill Whelan

Hello, Riverdance, it’s me, Bill. Yep, something changed in 1994 and the world would never be the same again… That fateful Eurovision interval piece has had the world Irish dancing for well over 2 decades now and it all began with Limerick and Bill Whelan. Thanks, hats off and knees up to ye both.

The Rubber Bandits

Blindboy Boatclub and Bobby Chrome have covered everything from comedy-based hip-hop to podcasts, represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale and described themselves as a type of movement using words we definitely can’t be repeating here. Weird, wonderful, and woeful that we haven’t seen them in a G+C store yet. Setting aside 2 x hoodies for the lads in Limerick, now.

Conor Murray

More rugby! Yay! This guy probably needs no introduction but here it is anyway… Born in Limerick in 1989, Conor played Gaelic Football before becoming a professional rugby player (debuting for Munster) in 2010. He plays scrum-half, won the John McCarthy Award for Academy Player of the Year in his first year with Munster, and generally seems pretty sound. Come by and see us in the Crescent, Conor!

Ruth Negga

Born in Addis Ababa and raised in Limerick, Ruth is an actress probably most well-known for her roles in the film Loving and TV Shows Love/Hate and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. If you grew up in Limerick in the 80s and 90s or went to Trinity in the 2000s, then maybe you were lucky enough to see her in a school play for free? This lady has been nominated for just about every award under the sun and we want to remind her we ship to the U.K., in case she fancies herself in a Pink Fleck…

Okay, so Limerick is jammers full of interesting, famous people but we’re newbies so maybe we missed someone…. Tell us who!!!!
